2025 Annual Letter from the Executive Director

By Piers Millett

IBBIS was founded in 2024 to fill a specific gap in the global ecosystem: the absence of an independent, international, technically credible organisation dedicated to reducing emerging biological risks as technology advances.

In less than two years, IBBIS has established ourselves as a credible, high-impact voice in the biosecurity space, of which 2025 was a defining year. We continued developing a globally relevant screening tool, launched a first-of-its-kind synthesis map, stood up two international consortia, and deepened our in-country engagement. This progress is key, particularly as biotechnology, supercharged by AI, advances faster than the governance frameworks designed to steward it. In 2025, we moved from setting direction to delivering the tools, standards, and partnerships needed to close that gap.

Our ambitions for 2026 are bigger still. We will build on the momentum of the past year, sharpen our advocacy, and extend the reach of our tools and partnerships, with particular focus on BRICS countries and redoubled engagement in China.

The architecture for preventing biological catastrophes is becoming more tangible. We are glad to be building it with you.
