For biosecurity to be effective, global standards must translate into workable solutions at the laboratory and national levels. Aligning sequence-screening practices internationally helps ensure that all countries (regardless of resources) can contribute to and benefit from a safer biotechnology ecosystem.

Okolo Judith Chukwuebinim is Assistant Director (Research) at the Bioresource Development Centre of Nigeria’s National Biotechnology Research and Development Agency (NBRDA), where she leads and supports research programmes advancing safe, sustainable, and nationally relevant biotechnology applications. Her work spans biorisk management, biosafety and biosecurity implementation, and the responsible use of biological resources in research and innovation.

Dr Okolo is an IFBA Certified Professional in Biorisk Management, Biological Risk Assessment and Biological waste management and brings extensive experience in laboratory oversight, risk assessment, and capacity-building. She plays an active role in strengthening institutional biosafety systems and promoting alignment between international biosecurity frameworks and practical implementation in African research settings. Her expertise contributes to regional efforts to embed global standards into national and institutional practice.
