Biosecurity Solutions Offered at the Biological Weapons Convention Review Conference

IBBIS was the main feature in a side event during the 9th Review Conference of the Biological Weapons Convention (BWC) in Geneva, Switzerland.

The event, hosted on December 6 by NTI | bio, showcased progress to establish IBBIS and the groundbreaking international Common Mechanism for DNA synthesis screening. A new video about IBBIS—its mission, role, and work—premiered at the event.

The event featured discussion on DNA synthesis screening led by IBBIS Executive Director Dr. Piers Millett. Dr. Millett was joined by NTI Biological Policy and Programs Vice President Dr. Jaime Yassif, Birmingham University Research Fellow Dr. Nicole Wheeler, Twist Bioscience Head of Biosecurity James Diggans, and DNA Script Co-Founder and COO Sylvain Gariel.

With the challenges posed by bioscience and biotechnology advances in mind, the speakers highlighted how DNA synthesis screening can prevent misuse of synthetic DNA by malicious actors, how DNA synthesis screening functions, and how IBBIS can prompt the international community to strengthen biosecurity norms and tools necessary to reduce risks throughout the bioscience and biotechnology research and development lifecycle.
