Common Mechanism | Get Started

Start screening with the Common Mechanism

The Common Mechanism is a free, open-source, globally-available tool for synthesis screening. The Common Mechanism sequence screening tool is under active development, and Version 0.1 of the commec package can be installed now. Using this tool, you can:

  • Screen sequences down to 50 base pairs in length.

  • Sensitively identify sequences of concern known to contribute to pathogenicity

  • Flag regulated pathogens, including those listed on the Australia Group Common Control List and a variety of national controls, including those from India, China, and South Africa.

More details on the performance of v0.1 of the Common Mechanism are available under Testing v0.1 of the Common Mechanism.

Installing the Common Mechanism

The Common Mechanism is under active development― a full setup guide is available on the Github wiki. Our technical staff and consultants are available to support users of our sequence screening software and are happy to guide you through the installation process.

Features

A validated screening solution

Before the launch of the software in May 2024, our testing showed:

  • Compliance with industry best practices when tested against real order customer streams

  • <2% false positive flags of real synthetic biology designs

  • Performance on par with industry screening tools in a standard test set

  • Proven resilience to AI-generated challenges

Configurable for sensitivity and speed

  • Runs a biorisk scan in seconds with under 1Gb of curated databases

  • Makes crucial calls on challenging sequences with the full power of the software

Screen your sequences on your terms

  • Free and open-source software and sequence databases

  • Runs locally to preserve control and privacy

  • Fully extensible with your custom databases
