From 29 to 30 July 2024, the IBBIS Executive Director, Piers Millett, participated in the
Global Pandemic Preparedness Summit in Rio de Janero, Brazil. This important event brought together R&D and manufacturing experts, government officials, civil society representatives and leaders from industry and the global health community. The Summit focused on three central themes:
- Equitable access to vaccines, medicines and other health technologies through geographical diversification and strengthening of R&D and local and regional production;
- Delivering the 100 Days Mission for vaccines, diagnostics and therapeutics; and
- Enhancing global disease surveillance
Together, this could transform the world’s ability to respond quickly and equitably to the next Disease X threat.
On the margins of the meeting, Piers also took part in a meeting of CEPI’s Biosecurity Strategy Group. This group provides advice to support the organizations work on
biosecurity. CEPI recognised the importance of defining “the risks and opportunities underpinning expanded investments in the development of safe and effective vaccines and other biologic countermeasures. In doing so, CEPI will play a leadership role to champion the international norms and standards that go along with these capabilities.”
