Addressing Catastrophic Biological Risks at the Munich Security Conference
IBBIS Executive Director Dr. Piers Millett joined global leaders in public health, biotechnology, and international security at the Nuclear Threat Initiative’s (NTI) “Preventing Bioweapons and Catastrophic Accidents: Safeguarding Bioscience and Biotech” side event at the 2023 Munich Security Conference (MSC) on February 17, 2023. Co-panelists included NTI Co-Chair and CEO Ernest J. Moniz Ernest J. Moniz, Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for Disarmament Affairs of the UN Office of Disarmament Affairs Izumi Nakamitsu, Deputy CEO of the Coalition of Epidemic Preparedness Innovations Frederik Kristensen, and NTI | bio Vice President Jaime Yassif.
The panel discussion raised awareness about emerging biological risks and the implications for international security, identified actions leaders in the public and private sector can take to diminish risks of accidents and misuse, and detailed how IBBIS can offer practical solutions to biosecurity. As the first international organization to reduce emerging biological risks associated with technological advances, IBBIS is committed to addressing catastrophic biological risks that endanger international security.
