IBBIS Executive Director, Piers Millett, participated at the inaugural meeting of the Biosecurity Game Changers initiative from 3-5 September 2024 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Piers was joined by by Edyth Parker, who has joined IBBIS for 12 months as a Fellow, through the Game Changers initiative.
The
Biosecurity Game Changers workshop convened over 50 next-generation and current experts from across the African Continent and around the world to discuss and decide on key challenges to address future worst-case biological scenarios, as well as next steps to further develop the Biosecurity Game Changers network, fellowship, and novel training approaches across the security and public health sectors in Africa.
Piers briefed participants on accidental and deliberate biological risks, focusing in particular on the impact of emerging biotechnologies , including the intersection for artificial intelligence and biodesign tools. He also facilitated a working group on key policy and operational barriers to preventing biological threats.
