Biosecurity Solutions Offered at the Biological Weapons Convention Review Conference
IBBIS was the main feature in a side event during the 9th Review Conference of the Biological Weapons Convention (BWC) in Geneva, Switzerland hosted by NTI | bio. Participants discussed progress to establish IBBIS and the groundbreaking international Common Mechanism for DNA synthesis screening. A new video about IBBIS’ mission, role, and work was premiered and followed by a discussion lead by IBBIS Executive Director Dr. Piers Millett, Dr. Jaime Yassif, Dr. Nicole Wheeler, Dr. James Diggans, and Sylvain Gariel on DNA synthesis screening. With the challenges posed by bioscience and biotechnology advances in mind, the speakers highlighted how DNA synthesis screening can prevent misuse of synthetic DNA by malicious actors, how DNA synthesis screening functions, and how IBBIS can prompt the international community to strengthen biosecurity norms and tools necessary to reduce risks throughout the bioscience and biotechnology research and development lifecycle.
