On the sidelines of the Biological Weapons Convention (BWC) Working Group sessions, the International Biosecurity and Biosafety Initiative for Science (IBBIS) officially launched the Global DNA Synthesis Map, the first publicly available global overview of the DNA synthesis landscape. It shows where DNA synthesis companies are located, the types of providers operating worldwide, how they screen orders, and the regulatory frameworks that apply in countries with synthesis capabilities.

The launch event brought together an expert panel to discuss the importance of improving transparency across the global DNA synthesis ecosystem and the role that evidence-based resources can play in strengthening biosecurity. Panelists highlighted the value of an open, accessible platform that supports informed decision-making for governments, industry, researchers, and the wider biosecurity community.

Synthetic DNA is becoming increasingly accessible, while global oversight remains fragmented and uneven. By bringing this information together in a single platform, the Map increases transparency and supports shared standards and evidence-based approaches to governance, serving as a practical resource to strengthen biosecurity strategies, inform policy development, and support responsible science.

The Global DNA Synthesis Map was developed in collaboration with the Asia Centre for Health Security, Sentinel Bio, the Engineering Biology Research Consortium and the Center for Biosafety and Strategy of Tianjin University. The project was led by Mayra Ameneiros, with contributions from experts and organizations across the world.
