IBBIS Executive Director chairs Biosecurity panel at SynbiTECH 2023
IBBIS Executive Director Dr. Piers Millett chaired the opening panel of SynbiTECH 2023 in London, UK on December 5. The meeting is the UK’s leading synthetic biology conference and is committed to building a multibillion-dollar synthetic biology industry with positive impact. The Biosecurity Panel brought together experts from the UK Cabinet Office, the UK Defence Science and Technology Laboratory, and the Centre for Long-Term Resilience think tank to explore how to balance the possible benefits of engineering biology with risks of misuse.

The panel discussed the UK’s National Biosecurity Strategy, which highlights the important role played by IBBIS. It explored how developments in AI impact biosecurity, picking up themes found in the recent report launched by NTI. Panelists also examined how UK lessons in biosecurity could be shared with the rest of the world.

In a second panel on the same day, Dr Nicole Wheeler who led the development of IBBIS’ Common Mechanism for Nucleic Acid Synthesis Screening, addressed the implications of artificial intelligence and machine learning for synthetic biology.
