Inclusive standards are stronger standards, said Professor Herawati Sudoyo. By ensuring that
Asia’s scientific communities are active partners in shaping global biosecurity norms, we
establish a foundation for safer and more equitable innovation worldwide.
Dr Herawati Sudoyo is one of Indonesia’s foremost molecular biologists and a distinguished advocate for biosafety, research ethics, and the responsible advancement of biotechnology in Asia. She currently serves as Principal Investigator at the Mochtar Riady Institute for Nanotechnology (MRIN) and as Chairperson for Medical Sciences at the Indonesian Academy of Sciences (AIPI). From 1993 to 2021, she served as Deputy Director of the Eijkman Institute for Molecular Biology, where she played a pivotal role in shaping Indonesia’s genomic research landscape—advancing infectious disease surveillance, capacity-building in biosafety and biosecurity, and bridging science with policy to strengthen the national research ecosystem.
Her leadership continues to integrate scientific excellence, ethical governance, and international collaboration, ensuring that innovation advances public health priorities while upholding the highest standards of safety and integrity. Within the IBBIS Technical Consortium, she brings deep expertise in regional implementation and policy harmonization, contributing to the development of globally coherent yet locally adaptable standards for DNA synthesis screening.
