Jim Huggett is Director of Biological Metrology at the UK’s National Measurement Laboratory (NML), hosted by LGC. He is an internationally recognized expert in nucleic acid measurement science, with particular expertise in quantitative PCR, digital PCR, reference materials, and standards development for molecular diagnostics and genomics.
Through his leadership at NML, Jim advances measurement frameworks that underpin reliability, reproducibility, and comparability in biological systems. His work supports the development of robust reference standards and internationally harmonized methodologies. These are critical foundations for quality assurance, regulatory confidence, and global interoperability in areas including nucleic acid technologies and biosecurity-relevant applications. As a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, he brings both scientific and clinical insight to the advancement of biological measurement science.
“Effective DNA sequence screening relies on accurate, comparable analysis which can be underpinned by standards and metrology. This way internationally aligned standards can ensure that screening decisions are scientifically sound, reproducible across borders and based on trusted measurement, strengthening both biosecurity and safe innovation.”
