Standards for sequence screening must reflect not only scientific rigour but global inclusivity. When emerging economies are part of the conversation from the start, we build systems that are stronger, trusted, and better able to protect and empower all communities while delivering the potential of emerging biotechnologies.

Ts. Dr. Mahaletchumy Arujanan is the Executive Director of the Malaysian Biotechnology Information Centre (MABIC), where she leads regional and international efforts to expand public understanding of biotechnology, strengthen science-based regulatory ecosystems, and support equitable access to emerging biotechnologies. Recognized as one of the world’s most influential voices in science communication, she has been named among Scientific American’s “100 Most Influential in Biotechnology” and has been featured in Nature and Asian Scientist.

She holds a PhD in Science Communication from the University of Malaya and has dedicated her career to bridging science, policy, media, and society. Dr. Mahaletchumy has developed biotechnology education programmes, led regional regulatory capacity-building, and advised governments and multilateral bodies on biosafety, gene editing, and responsible innovation. Her work through ISAAA-BioTrust advances global dialogue on biotechnology governance, access, and public trust. These are key pillars for safe and beneficial deployment of new tools.

In addition to her scientific and policy leadership, she founded and edits The Petri Dish, Malaysia’s first science newspaper, and is a sought-after educator and advocate for inclusive bio-innovation across Southeast Asia and the Global South.
