Michael Barnett is the Bioinformatics Engineer for the Common Mechanism. They are a passionate programmer and data visualization enthusiast, with experience leveraging the Unreal Engine to explore and communicate protein structure data. Their previous research has focused on computationally solving the phase problem of protein X-ray crystallography de novo using general constraints and the magic of iterative projection algorithms, specifically with application to high-solvent structures. Michael was previously awarded his PhD from the University of Auckland for structural studies on the retroviral capsid proteins of HIV-1, contributing to novel drug design candidates. He has since brought his scientific expertise into the world of software engineering, developing tools and pipelines that bridge complex data and intuitive interfaces.
