Millett Participates in OECD Global Forum on Technology
IBBIS Executive Director Dr. Piers Millett, took part in the inaugural Global Forum on Technology, a new initiative from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). The meeting, hosted in Paris, France on June 6, brought together more than 300 senior policymakers, leading technology experts, and a wide variety of stakeholders from more than 50 countries to discuss “shaping our future at the tech frontier.”

The meeting explored three major themes: (1) How can a more responsible and rights-oriented technology development and deployment be ensured? (2) How can emerging technologies foster resilient societies and better address climate change? and (3) How can technology policy better anticipate and bridge digital and technological divides?

During a mainstage session on synthetic biology, Dr. Millett asked panelists about guardrails for the responsible development of biological engineering, such as gene synthesis order and customer screening. Panelists agreed on the importance of such initiatives, with one prominent synthetic biologist encouraging the OECD to work with IBBIS on this important issue.
